The company is named after the building in which it was first located. The building is an old hall that was simply call 'Oultwood'. The building consists of a hundred year old grand hall and a much older and simpler farmhouse. The 'grand' frontage of the hall was re-built in 1896 following a major fire.

The building is suitated in Oulton which is famous its stretch of water known as "Oulton Broad". It is not clear whether Oulton was named after Oultwood or the other way around.

Oultwood is internationally famous for its local government index which is generally regarded as the best index of its type. The index has now been running for nearly six years.

Based upon the experience gained from running the local government index, Oultwood now specialises in the production of fast loading and easy to navigate websites. The small team has extensive knowledge of web technologies and their effective use.

The internet has now evolved so that instead of static web sites there are now many that use database technology to generate their pages.

Oultwood has considerable experience of web database design and implementation. An interesting example of this is the UK.WhatsOn.ws site which is gradually become the major "Whats On" site for the UK.

Another interesting example is the TVYC (Tendring Virtual Youth Centre) site that was produced for Tendring District Council. This website contains a number of high performance and innovative internet technologies:

• text to speech using MS Agents
• fast randomized graphics using style sheets and server-side scripting
• compact animations using style sheets and client-side scripting
• automactic generation of search engine meta tags using server-side scripting
